Connor Naismith MP Secured a Commons Adjournment Debate on Crewe’s Vital Role in Rail Connectivity
Connor Naismith, MP for Crewe and Nantwich, has successfully brought Crewe’s unparalleled significance to the UK rail network to the forefront of parliamentary discussions by securing a prestigious House of Commons adjournment debate. Held on Monday (20th January), the debate highlighted the vital role Crewe plays in the nation’s transport infrastructure and advocated for further investment in its future.
Speaking passionately in the Chamber, Mr Naismith underscored Crewe Railway Station’s unique position as one of the most connected stations in the UK, linking cities and communities across the country. He emphasised that Crewe’s connectivity makes it a linchpin for regional growth, job creation, and sustainable transport, underscoring why the government must prioritise investment in its development.
“Crewe is not just a station; it is a symbol of ambition and opportunity for the North,” said Mr Naismith. “To fully unlock its potential, we need the government to commit to enhancing its infrastructure, ensuring it remains fit for purpose in the 21st century and beyond.”
The adjournment debate comes amidst increasing public and stakeholder support for the #ConnectCrewe campaign, which has called for the government to deliver a HS2 successor project connecting the North and Midlands through Crewe. Mr Naismith used the debate to echo the campaign’s call for clarity on plans for Crewe’s station upgrades and the integration of HS2, ensuring Crewe remains a cornerstone of national connectivity.
During the debate, Mr Naismith shared compelling evidence from local businesses and residents who rely on Crewe’s rail network. He also cited studies that highlight the economic benefits of enhanced rail services, stressing the need for urgent government action to prevent Crewe from being left behind in national transport strategies.
“Securing this debate was a crucial step in ensuring Crewe’s voice is heard loud and clear in Westminster,” Mr Naismith added. “The potential here is enormous, but we need decisive action to turn potential into reality.”
As the #ConnectCrewe campaign continues to gather momentum, the adjournment debate is seen as a milestone in pushing for the investment and recognition Crewe deserves.
