Connor Naismith MP Labour Member of Parliament for Crewe and Nantwich
We know the world of work is changing for young people. Advancements in automation mean that the skillsets required for many roles are geared more towards technological understanding than traditional academic qualifications.
While university remains a popular option for students, there is also a growing number who opt against continuing full-time education, choosing to start earning straight away.
This government has made it a priority to make sure the next generation have the tools they need to start their career on firm footing. Labour have committed £725 million to get a further 50,000 young people into apprenticeships, tackling youth unemployment by working alongside businesses to help match skills training with local job opportunities.
Last year, I attended the Careers Fair at South Cheshire College and met with employers like Bentley Motors, Likewize, Microsoft and Bakkavor; all keen to get young people through their door.
I know application processes can feel daunting, and some feel like they don’t belong in certain spaces – particularly for larger employers. I am determined that we continue to break down those barriers for people from all backgrounds, and to make sure we are bringing the opportunities to them.
For those interested in working in local government, Cheshire East Council offer apprenticeships in a range of different subjects, including business administration, finance, human resources, IT, legal, health and social care and horticulture.
Cheshire College has over 1,000 apprentices and works with over 500 local, national and international employers. Anyone over 16 and not in full-time education can apply.
Bentley Motors have also just opened applications for their next intake of apprentices, and residents have until 20th February to apply.
Those looking for work can also find apprenticeship opportunities on the government website, where there are currently 133 postings available across Cheshire, and openings in Crewe and Nantwich in mechanical engineering, early years, catering, and support work.
There are so many opportunities to kickstart a career in our area. I am proud of the changes this Labour government is making to promote apprenticeships as that vital first step.
