Connor Naismith MP on a visit to Looking After The Homeless in Crewe.

Homelessness should not be a worry in 2027. Sadly, the latest monthly data shows that over 7,000 people are still sleeping on the streets.

Average life expectancy for rough sleepers is more than 30 years lower for both men and women.

On his first day in office, the Prime Minister launched an urgent national drive to end rough sleeping.

Now, Labour has announced a £442 million package to get everyone sleeping rough in for Christmas, taking total investment done by this government in homelessness and rough sleeping services over the next three years to over £4 billion. That funding includes £631,649 for Cheshire East Council.

This programme will provide new accommodation and support for those experiencing homelessness across Crewe & Nantwich as well as delivering wraparound support for people who have experienced the longest periods of rough sleeping and face the greatest barriers to leaving the streets permanently.

For many this means a roof over their head, but it could also mean support to address their mental health or addiction needs or help to find work.

Building on existing actions through the National Plan to End Homelessness to eliminate the use of B&B accommodation for families except in emergencies by the end of this Parliament, the Government is shifting the system towards preventing homelessness before it takes place.

The Prime Minister has also announced he will host a first of its kind national summit in the Autumn to bring together leaders from across society – from business, finance, charities, health, faith communities and more – to ask what role each of them can play in ending rough sleeping.

Labour are bringing everyone together in a national drive to step up and play their part in ending rough sleeping – with everyone pulling in the same direction at a local level to make real change backed by funding at a national level.

That’s the Prime Minister keeping to his day 1 commitment to end rough sleeping for good.
